On October 21, 2010, the Transferware Collectors Club returns to the University of New Hampshire in Durham, the site of its inaugural meeting in 2000. We will convene at the new conference center in Holloway and Huddleston Halls for dinner and evening lecture.

On Friday we travel to the historic port city of Portsmouth, a major shipping center in the 18th and 19th centuries, with rich archaeological collections of all types of ceramics and a wide assortment of transferware which descended through local families. We will visit two house museums as well as Strawbery Banke Museum, where we will tour the Goodwin and Chase houses, the reserve collection in the Carter Curatorial Center, and view an assortment of excavated transferware from local sites. Two private collections, one with a focus on one specific pattern and the other based on pieces with New Hampshire connections, will be open to us, and we finish the day with a clambake at the elegant Governor Langdon mansion, a Historic New England property.

Saturday will be a full day of lectures and workshops. Some of the topics are Enoch Wood's historic views, advertising on transferware, the evolution of tea wares. In the afternoon, participants will choose two out of four workshops covering the following topics:

How to search the Pattern and Source Print Database: Valuable tips and techniques on how to get the most from your search
Restoration pros and cons
Reading a Plate: Clues to body, age, maker, type of transfer
Archeology at Strawbery Banke’s Chase House

Lectures will continue on Sunday morning, but the afternoon will be devoted to the much anticipated members’ show and sale.

The autumn foliage in the seacoast area should be spectacular. UNH is readily accessible from Boston by both train and bus, and our hotel, the Holiday Inn Express in Durham, is within walking distance of the conference center.
