This extensive 34 piece Copeland and Garrett porcelain tea set is decorated with a green printed pattern (pattern 4841), which consists of birds perched on grapevines, together with leaves and flowers, and then enhanced with hand gilding. The set comprises a teapot and stand, a lidded sugar bowl, a milk jug, a 233 mm (9 inches) diameter plate, 10 teacups, 9 coffee cups and 10 saucers. The teapot, sugar bowl and the creamer all stand on quadrate bases, with the teapot standing 150 mm ( 6 inches) high and measuring 265 mm (10.5 inches) from the handle to the spout. The body of the set is of "Felspar Porcelain", which was introduced by Spode in 1821 and continued into the Copeland and Garrett period. Most of the set is marked with the rarely seen "Copeland and Garrett Felspar Porcelain" mark as shown below. The plate also carries an impressed "F", which according to Robert Copeland in his "Spode and Copeland Marks", was probably intended as an internal identification for a changed trial recipe. With some minor damage to some cups and saucers, it effectively becomes a teaset for six, with some spares. There are also some small firing cracks on the teapot, the sugar bowl and the milk jug. Overall the set is in good condition with minimal wear to the printed pattern and the gilding. C 1838.
