The “Fisherman” series by Enoch Wood & Sons (E.W.&S.) has eleven variations with different central images recorded in the TCC Database. Unlike most transferware series, this one can be found with at least six different borders and multiple color combinations! E.W.&S., in business in Burslem from 1818 to 1846, was one of the most innovative Staffordshire potteries of its time. In addition to their high-quality engraving and printing, they produced some of the earliest polychrome transferware. Another of their atypical practices was the interchangeable use of borders on multiple patterns or series. This is described in the database listing for “Fisherman” #01. The variation seen in the puzzle is “Fisherman” #03 with the “Diamond” border. Other borders illustrated with the series in the database are “Shell,” “Shell and Fishbowl,” Floral and Medallion,” “Fabric,” and “Festoon” borders.
